עברית: מצדה הוא מבצר עתיק על פסגתו של צוק מבודד, בשוליו המזרחיים של מדבר יהודה, המתנשא לגובה של 63 מטרים מעל פני הים, וכ-450 מטרים מעל ים המלח שלמרגלותיו. הצוק נבחר על ידי המלך הורדוס לשמש כמקום מפלט ומצודה מלכותית ועל פסגתו השטוחה נבנו ארמונות מפוארים, מבני ציבור ותענוגות. ביצורים הקיפו את המצוק ומערכות לאיסוף ואגירת מים הבטיחו אספקה שוטפת לכל אורך השנה. על פי יוסף בן מתתיהו, על מצדה עלה וצר, בשמונה מחנות מצור, הלגיון העשירי הרומאי ולאחר קרבות נואשים על חומות המבצר ומשאפסה תקוות המורדים להסיר את המצור הם בחרו להתאבד ולא לסיים את חייהם כעבדים.
