The picture was in "Yokohama photo album", a souvenir photographs for foreign people.

撮影者はFelice A. Beato( 1833年~ 1907年)。

The scene of the crucifixion was photographed in the early Meiji era (19th century), by Felice A. Beato (1833 ~1907).

The convict was Sokichi(壮吉), a 25-year-old shop employee. He brought a band of robbers into the shop, and they killed the shop owner and owner's family.

While other robbers were simply beheaded, Sokichi was sentenced crucifixion, because murdering his master was considered as a specially serious crime that deserves the extreme penalty.

The location is reported as Kurayamizaka(闇坂, or 鞍止坂 in another way of writing), Yokohama.

The color information has been discarded though the original picture was artificially colored.
