Holon Institute of Technology (HIT) is an Israeli academic institution focusing on education and research in the fields of science, applied mathematics, engineering, digital medical technologies, instructional technologies, industrial engineering/ technology management and design.

Budgeted by Israel's Council for Higher Education, HIT is an independent public academic entity, with over 7,000 students: 5,500 studying for a range of academic degrees (Bachelor's and Master's), 1,000 in pre-academic preparatory programs, and 900 in diploma programs (figures for A/Y 2021-2022).

History

HIT was established in 1969 by the Holon Municipality, as an institute for training engineers, and was attended in its first year by 120 students. In 1991 the institution's name was changed to 'Holon Center for Technological Education'. Officially registered as a nonprofit and under the academic umbrella of Tel Aviv University, it was now authorized to train both new and practicing educators for teaching the technological disciplines. Graduates were awarded a BA in Technological Education and a teaching certificate in the fields of electricity, electronics, mechanics, and industrial design.

In 2002 it was recognized by the Council for Higher Education as an independent academic institution of higher education called the Holon Academic Institute of Technology (HAIT), and in 2006, it was rebranded as HIT - Holon Institute of Technology.

In December 2011, HIT was granted authorization to confer the rank of Associate Professor in five different disciplines, on the condition that there were at least five professors in the specific field of the candidate for professorship.

In 2018, the New York Institute of Technology and Holon Institute of Technology partnered via a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on students and faculty initiatives in a variety of areas.

Academic programs

HIT engages in both theoretical and applied research, as well as teaching, in the following disciplines: sciences, computer science, electrical and electronic engineering, digital medical technologies, design, industrial engineering and technology management, instructional technologies, and data science. Within the framework of these eight main academic specializations, HIT offers 16 different study programs - for B.Sc., B.A., B.Des., M.Sc., M.A. and M.Des. degrees, as well as three Master's programs with a thesis. The Institute trains scientists, technological professionals, engineers, managers, and designers, preparing its students for future roles in hi-tech, security, finance, and other industries. It collaborates closely with industry and organizations seeking HIT’s knowhow, engaging in joint activities which include guest lectures, project mentoring, teaching, and more.

Research, Development and External Affairs Authority

HIT's Research Authority, within the office of the VP for Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Internationalization, initiates, promotes, and manages a wide range of research activities conducted by the Institute's academic faculty, including both basic and applied research. Emphasis is placed on developing and expanding collaborations through competitive research grants from foundations and agencies in Israel and worldwide. The Research Authority assists researchers in many critical procedures: developing collaborations, preparing, and submitting grant proposals, managing procurement and HR, preparing and overseeing research budgets, and providing financial reports to granting foundations.
