Zane Steckler, more professionally known as Sematary, is an American artist. He is a rapper, singer, songwriter, and producer. He is the co-founder of the hip hop collective Haunted Mound. He is well known for his contributions to the horrorcore genre. His music is characterized by its unique blend of horrorcore, with witch house and trap elements, often featuring occult themes and violent imagery.

He is the co-founder of the rap collective, Haunted Mound, and gained a heavy cult following through the social-media platform TikTok, along with his appearance at Greyday 2023, a tour hosted by the New Orleans rap-duo $uicideboy$.

Early life and education

Zane Steckler was born on December 22, 2000, to parents June and Brian Steckler. He grew up in Placer County, California. His father, Brian, is a composer known for his work in movies and TV shows while his mother, June, is an abstract painter. His younger brother, Nate Steckler, is also involved in music production. Despite having a religious upbringing, Zane Steckler has openly denied any current practice of faith. However, religious symbolism often appears in his artwork and videos to empathize their aesthetic appeal. He graduated from Granite Bay High School in 2019.

Career

Growing up with a TV composer for a father, Steckler has been greatly exposed to music, and began experimenting with music creation software like GarageBand at the age of 11. He created tracks inspired by artists such as Deadmau5, and dove into dubstep and club music. Steckler stated that he listened to witch house while he was still very young, and has attempted to replicate the sound. Over time, he discovered future musical influences on other online platforms.

After eight years of producing music, he transitioned to rapping, considering it to be more enjoyable than solely producing. Steckler’s sampling choices, ranging from black metal bands to Xiu Xiu, explored an untraditional headway for the genre. In 2019, when Steckler was a senior in high school, he co-founded the "Haunted Mound" collective with his friend Wren Kosinski, also known as Ghost Mountain. The collaborative project allowed both artists to experiment with and improve their own musical styles. In August 2019, Steckler and Kosinski released their debut mixtape "Grave House" marking the beginning of their musical partnership. In November of that year, Steckler published his first solo project, "Rainbow Bridge," with tracks like "Slaughter House" and "Bunny Suit" garnering much attention from the tape.

In 2021, following the growth of Haunted Mound's reputation, Steckler released "Rainbow Bridge 3". The album gained significant attention. Despite offers from multiple record labels, Steckler chose to maintain independence. In mid-2021, Kosinski, also known as Ghost Mountain, left the Haunted Mound. An interview with another artist, Buckshot (another member of the Haunted Mound), mentioned that the former felt "burnt out" from the music scene, possibly leading to his depature. It has also been rumored that Kosinski quit to focus on college.

Merchandise releases associated with Haunted Mound have consistently experienced rapid sell-outs. Various online communities, such as the Haunted Mound subreddit, engage in thorough analysis of Steckler's social media presence. In 2022, Steckler announced a successful world tour following numerous sold-out venues.

In 2023, Steckler released the mixtape "Butcher House" in January, which included collaborations with various artists like Black Kray (also known as Sickboyrari). Steckler went on a tour across North America with $uicideboy$. His involvement in events such as Lyrical Lemonade's Summer Smash and his collaboration with BLP Kosher on "Huntin Wabbits" further highlighted his presence within the rap community. Additionally, a notable collaboration with Chief Keef and fellow Haunted Mound member Hackle titled "Fuck The World" garnered significant attention. He released his EP "King of the Graveyard", inspired by his earlier appreciation for black metal, and announced his decision to remake his 2020 EP "Warboy."

Influences

Steckler's music is deeply rooted in the horrorcore genre. He has cited rappers Yung Lean and Black Kray as primary influences, as well as the band Salem; the latter in particular for their nocturnal, chopped-and-screwed experiments from the 2010 record King Night. He states: "…I was like listening to a lot of Salem, who didn't have any new music out at that time and hadn't for…years and years. I was always listening to them [and] Yung Lean, which had influences from Salem. And like Black Kray, who had some Salem references and [would] put their songs in his videos sometimes and shit. I was like, 'I wish there was more rap music that sounded like that and like Yung Lean.' And I was like, 'Damn, nobody's making that. I guess I could do that.' And I was already wanting to do some music, [and] so I started making that." Steckler has also claimed Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame, and Chief Keef’s drill and trap music styles to have left a mark on his sound. He also samples several songs by black metal artists on occasion, such as Phantom Spire, Woods of Desolation, and Leviathan.
