The main heading for this word is incorrect. Most foreigners will read this as 'muh' 'ban' which does not accurately represent the correct sound of this word (actually 2 words). The most accurate transliteration in my opinion is 'Moo Baan' - both the 'oo' and the 'aa' are long sounds. I have never seen it transliterated as 'Muban' and the resultant sound is not recognisable as the word it is meant to be. I encourage other thoughts!

Yes, it is actually two words, and the pronunciation (when writing it for an Englishman) is more a "moo baan". However, the standard transcription (RTGS) does render it as muban (or mu ban) - it does not differentiate between long and short vocals at all. But even though this standard has its flaws, it is at least a standard, the many variants of romanization is a pain, which we don't want to have here. But maybe it'd help to add the correct pronounce in IPA? andy (talk) 12:11, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'd suggest sticking with the RTGS. The spellings that are adopted to accommodate Anglophones can be very confusing to speakers of other languages. Kortoso (talk) 19:11, 18 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Toilets[edit]

Having added details about ban lek ti, I'd like to add that to get one, you have to have an approved outhouse or toilet, but don't have a reference. I also don't have a reference for the disappearance of wild watermelons and pepper bushes at village margins. Anybody else?--Pawyilee (talk)

Southeast Asia Village[edit]

Mention of capital-V Village is now piped to Village#Southeast_Asia, which now leads off with

The remaining sections mention hamlet (place), and I know for a fact that the US Air Force had used that term in translations of house registrations for newly acquired dependents during the daze of its Vietnam War.
