Retention period[edit]

Retention period is meant for Records not for Documents. Let me clarify the difference between record & documents.

Record is evidence of activities performed. And Document is information and its supporting media. Documents can be changed with revisions but records can not be changed.

So Retention period is related to records.

In the old days when we used magnetic tapes with (mainframe) computers, written reels of tape had a retention period. Every couple of years, typically five, those tapes had to be rewritten (copied), so as to avoid disturbing magnetic copies from one round to the adjacent rounds of tape. Tapes older than their retention period were scratched and reused. – Fritz Jörn (talk) 12:50, 14 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
