Awards[edit]

A recent edit made mentioned of the award of the Israel Prize (as well as The Hague Prize) in the opening paragraph of the article. This is in addition to reference to both prizes in the infobox, as well as under the specific section for awards and honors. I beilieve that it is totally unneccessary to make reference to awards in three places. In all other aticles relating to Israel Prize recipients, the prize is only mentioned in the awards section. A person is not notable because he or she received a particular award, he or she received the award because of the notable contributions made by him or her. The awards are a consequence of such notability and therefore does not belong in the opening paragraph. I have accordingly removed the edit in question for a second time, and would ask the user to refrain from adding it again without an acceptable explanation as to why this recipient's article should differ from the hundreds of other articles on Israel Prize recipients. • First of all, the ibox. The ibox is viewed separate from the article. It is a summary list of info that a reader can refer to. Existence of info in the article, and vice versa, are not examples of items being redundant. They are the way the ibox works. It is for that reason, for example, that nearly every item in an ibox is also in an article. And that inlining in one is not reason not to inline in the other.

Second, the lede. Again, nearly everything said in every properly written lede is in the article itself. Per WP:LEAD,

The lead serves ... as a summary of the important aspects of the subject of the article. The lead should ... explain why the subject is interesting or notable, and summarize the most important points.... The lead section should briefly summarize the most important points covered in an article in such a way that it can stand on its own as a concise version of the article.... Significant information should not appear in the lead if it is not covered in the remainder of the article.... This should not be taken to exclude information from the lead, but to include it in both the lead and body.

Finally, being awarded notable honors is notable in itself. Someone being knighted is not non-notable, by analogy, because they received knighthood due to the fact that they are notable. Same here. See, in accord, criterion 2 for wiki notability of academics -- it is for receiving a highly prestigious academic award or honor at a national or international level.. The assertion that such awards are non-notable is not only at odds with what I view as common sense (really - a player winning an MVP award is non-notable?), but at direct odds with wiki standards. Cf. as well winners of the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award (such as Sean Penn), Grammy Award (such asGeorge Solti), and Nobel Prize (Madame Curie). This is self-evident.

If other articles fail to properly reflect notable awards in the ledes, I would suggest they be changed as well--the rationale supplied for them not having been put in ledes (or removed?) is a weak one, that IMHO does not withstand scrutiny. With all due respect.--Epeefleche (talk) 03:53, 26 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
