"Romantic"?[edit]

Nuts, here we are: "Hanson wrote his Second Symphony, his most famous work, in 1930. He titled it 'Romantic' as a self-conscious reaction to the formalism he saw predominating so much concert music in the era of Stravinsky's neo-classicism and the Second Viennese School's serialism. At the time, Hanson wrote (presciently) 'romanticism will find in this country rich soil for a new, young, and vigorous growth.'" -John Shinners^[1]

Hanson offered that his aim for the piece was “to create a work young in spirit, Romantic in temperament, and simple and direct in expression.” He later added that he saw it as “a protest against the growing Schoenbergism of the time.” Kortoso (talk) 21:46, 25 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
