Transport vs. Transportation[edit]

22:07, 17 July 2006 Cultural Freedom (Talk | contribs) (moved Transport in Jordan to Transportation in Jordan: RV -- Jordan is not part of the UK! Please read the Manual of Style! (And please don't remove warnings from your talk page.) Peace, please!)

Jordan used to be a British depndency. The railways in Jordan were built by the British. The Railways in Jordan come under the Jordanian Ministry of Transport [1]. What's the problem? 88.111.106.227 07:46, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, there are a number of problems here. (But don't get upset until you read the conclusion of this comment! :) ) 1) There is nothing in the Manual of Style that says that articles about things built by the British should use British spelling. 2) There is nothing in the Manual of Style that says that former British dependencies should use British spelling (Canada, the U.S., etc., are all former British dependencies or colonies!). What matters here, according to the Manual of Style, is what the first post-stub version of the article used. However, someone just made me aware of something I hadn't realized: that all the Transport articles were taken from the CIA World Factbook site. That means all were in American English. That's obviously inappropriate, so exceptions to the Manual of Style have to made here! I don't think former dependency/colony status should matter, but I do think Jordanians' own preferences matter. Looking at some official Jordanian Web sites leads me to believe they prefer (perhaps only slightly, but still) "Transport". So let's keep this as it now is. Sorry I didn't know about the CIA World Factbook bit! That's important here. Peace, Cultural Freedom 2006-07-18 10:42 (UTC)
Most of the railways in Jordan (the Hedjaz Railway) were built by the Ottomans, a decade or two before the British took over during WWI. Tabletop (talk) 08:43, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rail transport[edit]

The rail transport section is now quite large so I intend to move it to Rail transport in Jordan. Are there any objections? Biscuittin (talk) 13:49, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
