Selim's lions as city emblem - really? When?[edit]

"Legend has it that Selim I dreamed of lions... This led to the lion becoming the heraldic symbol of Jerusalem.<ref>Jerome Murphy-O'Connor, ''The Holy Land: an Oxford archaeological guide from earliest times to 1700'', 2008...</ref>

Murphy-O'Connor did indeed write that, but I'm pretty sure Israel chose the symbol of Judah, not Selim's lions or Baybars' leopards, being happy to leave everybody to see what they please. I looked up Emblem of Jerusalem and it's clearly the "lion of Judah". What might be true is that the Ottomans chose Selim's lions, derived from Baybars' felines, as the city's symbol, but that's not what is stated now. Did they? Did they even have such heraldic city symbols? I know Muslim knights had some basic coats of arms, Mamluks used symbols for their ranks, but I'm not aware of such heraldic figurative imagery in the Ottoman Empire. (Here is a very short presentation on Muslim heraldry focusing on the Mamluks.) Baybars obviously did use two "lions passants".

What was the never ratified 1943 emblem (see Emblem of Jerusalem)?
